The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s government for fully suspending the provincial fuel tax, saving drivers 13 cents per litre of diesel and gasoline.

“This move will save about $15 every time we fill-up our pickup trucks and truckers will save about $118 when they fill their tanks with diesel,” said Kris Sims, Alberta Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Pretty much everything we eat and use is delivered to us on trucks, so this helps lower the costs for millions of people.”

The provincial fuel tax suspension kicked in on Jan 1, 2023, and will last for at least the next six months.

Previous to the tax-cutting measure, the provincial fuel tax was 4.5 cents per litre of fuel and set to rise in line with the price of oil.

“With the full suspension of the fuel tax, families will save about $10 every time they fill-up their minivans,” said Sims.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has been urging the provincial government to entirely suspend the fuel tax for months.

“This means Albertans now pay the lowest fuel taxes in Canada,” said Sims. “The remaining fuel taxes total about 28 cents per litre of gasoline and they’re all imposed by the federal government.”
