Sept. 22-24 Recap: Kodiaks soccer continue their winning streak

The Kodiaks soccer teams had a thrilling weekend of play, showcasing their dominance in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) by extending their winning streak.

The women’s soccer team hosted the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings on Saturday and emerged victorious with an impressive 8-0 victory. On the following day, both the women’s and men’s teams traveled to Medicine Hat to face the Rattlers, securing wins in their respective matchups.

Looking ahead, the Kodiaks’ cross-country teams are set to host a Grand Prix event at Nicholas Sheran Park this Saturday. Also, that afternoon, the soccer teams will host the SAIT Trojans, in a match that will determine the leader of the south division in the ACAC.

Sept. 23 WSOC | Kodiaks 8 vs University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings 0

In their first meeting against the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings, the Kodiaks exhibited relentless pressure from the start. Malorie Hanson (fourth year, General Studies, Whitehorse) was the first to score for the Kodiaks. Not letting up, the Kodiaks added two more goals in quick succession, with Raeleen Vanden Dungen (fifth year, Early Childhood Education, Vauxhall) scoring. Malorie Hanson added her second goal of the half, and the Kodiaks extended their lead with goals from Kenley Matishak (second year, Academic Upgrading, Calgary) and Raeleen Vanden Dungen from a penalty kick. The first half concluded with the Kodiaks holding a commanding 5-0 lead.

The second half saw the Vikings attempt to break through the Kodiaks’ defence, but the Kodiaks’ Kyra Piekema (first year, General Studies, Lethbridge) added three more goals, securing an 8-0 victory for the Kodiaks.

Sept. 24 WSOC | Kodiaks 2 at Medicine Hat College Rattlers 1

The Medicine Hat Rattlers hosted the Kodiaks on Sunday in the Highway 3 rivalry. The Kodiaks came out quick with a goal in the tenth minute by Raeleen Vanden Dungen (fifth year, Early Childhood Education, Vauxhall). This was followed by another Kodiaks goal by Montanna Rouselle (second year, General Studies – English, Cranbrook, BC). The play was heavily controlled by the Kodiaks in the first half, managing to put up 11 shots on goal.

The second half came and went with only one additional goal produced in the last 45 minutes. The Rattlers managed to get past the Kodiaks line and put up a point. The Kodiaks defence stayed strong and kept possession for the rest of the match. Kodiaks took home the win 2-1 over the Rattlers.

Sept. 24 MSOC | Kodiaks 2 at Medicine Hat College Rattlers 1

In a battle between highway 3 rivals, it was the Kodiaks men who left victorious. The Kodiaks came out early and scored the opening goal on a shot from Ryder Skolka (first year, Business General, Nelson, BC) after a scramble in front of the MHC goal in the 16th minute. Late into the first half the Rattlers battled back to tie the game. The Rattlers men continued to press in the 1st half but were unable to add to their score.

The second half the Kodiaks came out aggressive and took back control. Late into the half a penalty kick from, Ben Knight (fifth year, General Studies, Manchester, England) was able to find the net and it held on to be the game winning goal. The Kodiaks won the match over the Rattlers 2-1.
