Schuler rolls on with its Centennial

Posted on 7 June 2022 by Ryan Dahlman

65 km north of Medicine Hat and 99 km straight south of Acadia Valley, the residents of the community of Schuler have a lot to be proud of, but come 2023, they will have 100 reasons to celebrate.

Schuler Centennial 2023 will go June 30-July 2 in the farming community of approximately 90 people.

After a June 1 meeting was called at the Schuler Curling Rink to ensure there would be the volunteer help to make the event go.

“Everything is moving ahead, which is pretty awesome to see,” explained Brad Herman, one of the organizing leaders who added there were “close to” 20 people who came out to the June meeting. “There were some really key people who stepped up. I think everything is looking pretty promising… you need a strong core group to pull this off an event like this. Small community, the previous celebrations for the 75th and 85th, there was some really good turnout from past and present residents. It takes a lot (of organizing/planning).”

While more than 365 days, seems like a long time away, this time evaporates when trying to get invitations sent out, halls and entertainment booked, area tours planned, food and meals catered or have volunteers prepared Herman knows it takes some effort to

So far activities which have been mentioned on the Centennial website include ”Kids activities, beer gardens with live music, parade, pancake breakfasts, banquet, (and) antique farm equipment show.” They will also have tours of the brand new schools which the community is particularly proud of as Herman points out, new schools are “hard to come by in rural Alberta.”

There are committees like finance, entertainment, donation and clean-up and set up to name a few.

“In the past, we have done history book updates. We are trying to see if that is something we can still do. Someone the people who have done the past ones aren’t around anymore. That’s a big position to fill; that’s a big undertaking;” explains Herman.  “We are working on an interfaith church service Sunday morning and we’re hoping to have a lot of memorabilia from past Schuler businesses and the school showcased as well.”

Herman said they are rolling in the Canada Day celebrations too, so there will be that much extra to celebrate on those days.

Besides that there is also a logo contest which is open to present and past Schuler School students. Winner will receive $100 cash in honour of the Centennial. Contest closes in just a little over a month at 11:59 p.m. July 15.
