The month of March is National Social Work Month as proclaimed by the Canadian Association of Social Workers. In Saskatchewan, the Government of Saskatchewan has officially proclaimed March 16-22 as Social Work Week in Saskatchewan. The theme for this year’s celebration is “In Critical Demand”.
The theme for Social Work Week is fitting as social work has always been essential. Social work was essential before the pandemic, crucial during the pandemic and now more than ever, social workers are in critical demand. Social workers engage with people in every area of the province, with people of all ages, and with people of all backgrounds. They help people reach their full potential and make our communities better places to live.
In Saskatchewan in 2020, there were 2255 registered social workers, spread out across the province, working in a wide range of practice. Social workers can be found working in public or private practice, or for community-based organizations across health, education, justice, disability and child welfare sectors. This includes working in mental health and addictions, hospitals, schools, family violence programs, family support, counselling services, settlement services, community and program development and many more. They may also be engaged in policy, planning or administration. Social worker’s primary concern is the social well-being of all people equally, with attention to their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. In addition, social workers advocate for inclusion, equality and social change.
The Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers promotes and governs the profession of social work in the province, ensuring accountability of registered social workers and protecting the public through recognized, ethical standards of practice. The member-based organization was first established in October 1962, and has grown from an active membership of 83 to more than 2,000 registered members.
During Social Work Month and week, local Branches and work units organize events to honor and celebrate the work social workers do. The City of Swift Current declared Social Work week at City Council on March 7. Social Work week in Swift Current is being celebrated from March 20-26. On Wednesday March 23 from 12-1 pm social workers in Swift Current and area can participate in a free yoga session at EI Wood Building or they can join on zoom. On March 25, 2022 social workers are gathering at the Social Bowl for a family friendly evening of bowling and networking.
If you see a social worker this month, make sure to thank them for all they do!
