Swift Current badminton team flies decently in Leader

The SCCHS badminton team attended the Leader senior tournament March 28.


The results are listed below:
Boys singles — Ethan Warkentin (Grade 12) finished first in his pool with a 4-0 record. In the semi-final he played the second-place finisher from Pool B. Warkentin won in three against Frank from Fox Valley, 21-11, 11-21 and 21-16. In the final, Warkentin played Dallyn from Cabri and defeated him 21-15 and 21-16. He was awarded the gold medal in boys singles. Layne Cadrain (Grade 9) finished fourth in his round robin pool with a record of 1-3.
Girls singles — Jessica Warren (Grade 11) finished first in her pool with a 2-0 record. Sierra Pleasance (Grade 9) finished second in her pool with a 2-1 record. These two crossed over and played in the semi final. Warren defeated Pleasance 21-10 and 21-9. This advanced Warren to the gold medal match and Pleasance to the bronze medal match. Pleasance had a close game against Kaitlynn from Cabri, but lost 17-21, 17-21 finishing fourth in the tournament. Warren defeated Cassandra from Hazlet in the final 21-17 and 21-19. She was awarded the gold medal in girls singles.
Boys doubles — The Grade 9 team of Adam Guider and Alex Wollbaum finished third in their pool with a 1-2 record. Kyle Ziegler (Grade 10) and Owen Ljunggren (Grade 9) finished their pool with a 0-3 record. These young teams were in tough in this tournament, but gave their opponents some good competition.
Girls doubles — The Grade 10 team of Lara New and Justine Bennett finished second in their pool with a 2-1 record. In the semi-final they played Savannah and Kenna from Fox Valley and lost 18-21 and 19-21. In the bronze medal match they defeated Dalaney and Janae from Leader 21-18 and 21-17. Trista Cormier (Grade 11) and Nicole Steinley (Grade 9) finished their pool with a 0-3 record.
Mixed doubles — The grade 10 team of Monica Torales and Grady Rogers finished 1st in their pool with a 4-0 record. In the semi-final they defeated Erik and Payton from Leader 21-19 and 21-12. This advanced them to the gold medal match where they faced Rebecca and Nicholas from Fox Valley. Torales and Rogers defeated this team during the round robin, but were unable to do so in the final. Fox Valley won 21-19 and 21-10. Torales and Rogers were awarded the silver medal in mixed doubles. Harshini Arumugam (Grade 11) and Matthew Epp (Grade 9) also finished 1st in their pool with a 3-0 record. In the semi-final they lost to the eventual gold medalists from Fox Valley 11-21 and 7-21.
In the bonze medal match they lost to Erik and Payton from Leader 10-21 and 19-21, finishing fourth in the tournament.
