The Swift Current Broncos saw their five-game win streak snapped on Wednesday night to the hands of the Regina Pats at the Credit Union i-Plex by a score of 4-2. It was an extremely competitive tilt as the Broncos played their fourth game in five nights and battled right to the end.

Swift Current stumbled out of the gates as Bryan Lockner scored the opening goal 1:38 into the first period.

Arizona Coyotes prospect and Broncos forward Lane Pederson redirected in his 21st goal of the season off a Colby Sissons wrist shot to knot the game up 1-1 late in the frame. The goalies were busy as shots on goal favoured the Broncos 15-14.

The Pats offence found the back of the net early in the second period as Dawson Leedahl’s low backhander snuck its way through the pads of Broncos netminder Taz Burman.

Then it was rookie forward Riley Krane burying his first goal of the season after the Pats completed a tic-tac-toe play on the man advantage to make it 3-1.

Broncos defenceman Matthew Stanley and Pats forward Braydon Buziak each earned five minute majors and game misconducts after both players landed several hits on each other in an emotional fight. That provided the Broncos a boost in their game as they began to create more scoring chances but still found themselves trailing 3-1 through 40 minutes.

Tough luck went against the Broncos as Tyler Steenbergen was denied his 48th goal of the season after the goal was called off due to a very close call in which goaltender interference resulted in the no goal. That was immediately followed by an Aleksi Heponiemi goal being waved off due to inconclusive evidence of the puck crossing the line.

Moments later, a goal would count as Pederson banged home his second of the night on a Swift Current power play to narrow the deficit to a 3-2 game.

With Burman pulled in the last couple of minutes, Wyatt Sloboshan provided some empty net insurance and the Broncos fell by a score of 4-2.

Shots on goal were 38-33 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos capitalized on one of their five power play chances and the penalty kill did its job by holding the Pats scoreless on their two man advantages.

The Broncos will now prepare for a home-and-home series against the Saskatoon Blades beginning on Friday, March 10th at the SaskTel Centre. Puck drop is at 7:05pm CT.
