The Swift Current Broncos finished a three-in-three set this weekend with their first shootout victory of the year, edging the Red Deer Rebels 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Credit Union iplex.

The Broncos got off to a quick start once again as Finnish import Aleksi Heponiemi picked the corner glove-high from the left faceoff dot to give Swift Current a 1-0 advantage.
Red Deer responded as Austin Glover tapped in a rebound around the Broncos goal crease to tie it at 1-1 but the Broncos restored their lead just two minutes later. Tyler Steenbergen buried his 34th goal of the year on the man advantage thanks to a terrific individual effort from team captain and St. Louis Blues prospect Glenn Gawdin. The 19-year-old centre powered his way down the wing and deked the Rebels defender to get his way to the Red Deer net and find an open Steenbergen for the goal.
In the second period, Glover netted his second goal of the night and 15th of the season to knot it at two goals apiece.
The home team didn’t make that last long as Broncos forward Kaden Elder scored the go-ahead goal to make it a 3-2 game for Swift Current after 40 minutes of play.
Red Deer tied it up yet again as terrific passing on a three-on-one rush resulted in a goal for Michael Spacek.
The see-saw affair continued as Lane Pederson made a terrific passing play at the point to find an open Colby Sissons who lasered a wrist shot blocker high by Rebels goaltender Riley Lamb to once again give Swift Current a one goal lead.
Michael Spacek and the Rebels continued their pesky play and it was Spacek that deposited the game-tying goal with a little over two minutes to go in regulation.
For the second straight night, the Broncos saw themselves in overtime and despite several scoring opportunities, a shootout was needed to determine a victor.
The Broncos entered the shootout 0-5 this season but prevailed this time around as Aleksi Heponiemi tallied the lone goal while Broncos netminder Jordan Papirny turned aside all three Rebels shooters to pick up his first win as a Swift Current Bronco, 5-4 being the final score.
Swift Current finished the day 1/2 on the power play while Red Deer went scoreless on their two power play tries. Shots on goal were 37 apiece.
