Bandits to open playoffs Friday

The Brooks Bandits will open their 2016 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) playoff campaign at home this coming Friday, March 18th, the AJHL has announced.

The Brooks Bandits (48-9-2) became just the sixth team in Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) history to score 300 goals in a season, downing the Calgary Canucks by a 6-2 margin in their second to last game of the 2015-16 season at the Centennial Regional Arena on Friday night.

The midget Oyen Bees team are preparing for what many small-town hockey players always dream of, which is playing for a provincial title. What’s extra special for them is they are doing it in their own rink.

Tristan Thompson (Canmore, AB) scored twice in the rink in which he played his minor hockey, and the Brooks Bandits (47-9-2) set a new franchise record for goals scored in a season, in an 8-1 road win over the Calgary Mustangs played in front of a near-sellout crowd at the Strathmore Family Centre on Tuesday night.

Bandits Bear, Makar receive AJHL award nominations

Brooks Bandits defencemen Shane Bear (Calgary, AB) and Cale Makar (Calgary, AB) are among finalists for two Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) regular season awards, it was announced Feb. 16.

A season-high crowd of 1,805 packed the Centennial Regional Arena in Brooks on a Family Day Monday afternoon, and was treated to a 5-2 win by the home side Bandits (44-7-2) over the Calgary Canucks, the team’s ninth consecutive win.

Alberta Winter Games ready to go in Medicine Hat

More than 2,500 participants, their families and spectators are expected to attend the 2016 Alberta Winter Games, February 13-16 in Medicine Hat.

County Central High School is looking for greater exposure for its athletics program. The online television network, vTV, wishes to increase community content and engagement. The result is live stream coverage of the John Wark Memorial Basketball Tournament finals Feb. 12-13.

Jared Cockrell (Byfield, MA) scored the first hat trick of his Junior A career, as the Brooks Bandits (41-7-2) downed the Calgary Canucks (18-30-3) by a 4-1 score on Tuesday night at the Max Bell Centre.
