The 2017-18 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) schedule has been released, with the defending league champion Brooks Bandits scheduled to open their campaign with a home-and-home series with the Okotoks Oilers in a rematch of the 2017 South Division Final.

The powerhouse campaign of the 2016-17 Brooks Bandits came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday night, as a 2-1 lead over the 2017 RBC Cup host Cobourg Cougars evaporated late, leading to a 3-2 overtime win for the host team in the championship final.

CJHL MVP Award goes to Bandit Cale Makar

Brooks Bandits defenceman Cale Makar (Calgary, AB) has become the first player in franchise history to be named Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Most Valuable Player, it was announced May 19.

Resting five key players, the Brooks Bandits (3-1) fell 5-2 to the host Cobourg Cougars in the final round robin game of the 2017 RBC Cup on Thursday night, clinching 2nd place in the round robin standings for the second consecutive year.

The Brooks Bandits (3-0) got eight goals from eight different goal scorers, recording the largest shutout win in the more than two-decade history of the RBC Cup, and largest at a national Junior A championship since a 9-0 win by New Westminster at the 1990 Centennial Cup, downing the central champion Trenton Golden Hawks 8-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

Burning bright on the steps of the Alberta Legislature building, the Flame of Hope was lit and carried off on a course to cities across Alberta.
On May 16 at noon, Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) officers paired with Special Olympics athletes from Calgary, Camrose, Edmonton, Lacombe, St. Albert, Strathcona County and West Central, stood proudly to witness the torch lighting of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope on the steps of the Alberta Legislature signalling the start of the LETR Final Leg which will spread awareness for the 2017 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games taking place in Medicine Hat this summer.
 

Ty Mappin (Big Valley, AB) scored the overtime winner on a sensational diagonal pass from Dennis Cesana (Providence, RI) as the Brooks Bandits (2-0) came back from a 1-0 third period deficit to down the Penticton Vees (0-0-1) by a 2-1 score at the 2017 RBC Cup national championship tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The Brooks Bandits secured a spot in the Western Canada Cup playoff round with a penalty-filled 4-1 win over the Battlefords North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League on Tuesday afternoon.

Ty Mappin (Big Valley, AB) and Josh McKechney (Calgary, AB) scored in the final three minutes to force overtime, and Dennis Cesana (Providence, RI) had the shootout winner, as the Brooks Bandits (2-0) came back from a 3-1 third period deficit to down the Western Canada Cup host Penticton Vees by a 4-3 shootout score on Sunday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
