Badminton championships wrap up season

The SHSAA region A badminton championships were held May 6 in Swift Current. 

The Brooks Bandits secured a spot in the Western Canada Cup playoff round with a penalty-filled 4-1 win over the Battlefords North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League on Tuesday afternoon.

Ty Mappin (Big Valley, AB) and Josh McKechney (Calgary, AB) scored in the final three minutes to force overtime, and Dennis Cesana (Providence, RI) had the shootout winner, as the Brooks Bandits (2-0) came back from a 3-1 third period deficit to down the Western Canada Cup host Penticton Vees by a 4-3 shootout score on Sunday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The senior badminton playoffs have started. 

Team captain Nick Prkusic (Medicine Hat, AB) led the way with 2 goals and an assist, as the Brooks Bandits captured their second consecutive Gas Drive Cup, and their fourth Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) championship in franchise history, downing the Whitecourt Wolverines 4-1 in Game 4 on Tuesday night at the Scott Safety Centre.


Josh McKechney (Calgary, AB) had two goals, and became the AJHL’s leading playoff scorer, as the Brooks Bandits battled back from a 2-1 deficit to take Game 3 of the 2017 Gas Drive Cup Final by a 3-2 final score on Monday night at the Scott Safety Centre.
