Trample those winter blues into the ground by attending Coaldale’s eighth annual 5K Family Fun Run April 21,  a community event that inspires children and families to get out and get active.

With the long range forecast looking great, the arrival of Spring will hopefully coincide with the kick off of this event.
This race truly is an event for all ages and abilities. With its professional chip timing and flat easy course, it appeals to everyone, from the competitive runner to the parent with young ones.
Pleased with this ongoing event, Kim Craig, the Mayor of Coaldale,  feels that anytime there are activities in Coaldale that are focused on participation at all age levels it represents a win-win for the community. The fact that it continues to be a chip timed event is a bonus for those competitors who are seeking to surpass their personal best.
“The Town of Coaldale is delighted to be an annual sponsor of this event that encourages families to be active together,” says Craig. “It really is a great way to kick-off spring in Coaldale and we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy being active.”
Event organizers, Melanie Harthoorn and Colleen Van Raalte, have been visiting businesses who expressed interest in participating in the Corporate Team Challenge. A whopping 12 businesses have agreed to come on board with this year’s friendly competition.
“The enthusiasm of these two ladies is quite remarkable and they inspired us to sign up,” comments Erik de Boer, Operations Manager for Intercontinental Truck Body (ITB). “The Corporate Team Challenge is a great opportunity to engage with and promote the Town of Coaldale, its services and businesses”, explains Van Raalte. “We have been encouraging teams to recruit employees, family, and friends and have been reporting their progress on social media.”
Challenge accepted by Town of Coaldale, the first team to enter, followed by Airway Refrigeration, Twisted Steel, Stuck by Whitening, Flaman, ITB, Adora Kitchens, Runner Souls, the Real Estate Centre, the Christian Credit Union, Dennis Dirtworx and Murray Chev Cadillac. The largest team will receive a $250 gift certificate to 3G Eatery, while the fastest team will receive an engraved traveling trophy to display at their business plus bragging rights.
An additional concept has been added to the Coaldale Family Fun Run this year. Sarina Donker and Eline Groenendaal, two teachers from Coaldale Christian School, are passionate about children and healthy living. They wanted to get their students pumped up for running.
They decided it would be exciting to challenge other schools to come out and compete against each other at the Coaldale Fun Run. Coupled with the fact that race organizers had a sponsor who was eager to contribute to the community in a meaningful way - the School Team Challenge was born.
Schools in Coaldale have been challenged: “Who can build the largest team?” Participating schools include: Coaldale Christian School, Jennie Emery Elementary, R.I. Baker Middle School and St. Joseph’s School.Parents can sign up their children at their school’s office.
Just by participating in the School Team Challenge, each student is eligible to win one of five $100 gift cards to Sport Chek. For the grand prize, the school with the largest team will be awarded $1,000 to be used towards a school athletic program (CCS exempt). These prizes have been generously donated by DH Fencing, a company that values our community, our youth, and active living.
“All teams will really contribute to the fun of the race,” states Harthoorn.
“On race day, businesses will be visible in corporate swag, kids will be promoting school spirit wearing their school’s colors, and the Coaldale and District Emergency Services will be decked out in fire protection gear.”
This chip-timed race will kick off at Coaldale Christian School on April 21 at 10 a.m. and will take a course through scenic rural Coaldale. Participants can be assured of the safety of the course since this easy-to-follow route is closed to traffic. Bring the whole family to participate, whether to run or walk, including babes in strollers.
All registered participants will be entered into a prize draw. In addition to medals for the fastest three competitors in every category, special prizes are also awarded to the youngest and oldest participants as well as the largest family and fastest stroller pusher. Ribbons are also given to our youngest racers as they cross the finish line for a job well done.
To register for this event visit racepro.ca/coaldale. Youth ages 15 and under can sign up at the new price of just $10, adults for $20.
All registration fees include race package, refreshments and prizes.
The Coaldale Food Bank will receive a $2 donation from every entry.   Proceeds have been pledged as the final installment to Project Playground Coaldale East (PPCE).
