The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society created the Adopt a Family program over a decade ago to assist families impacted by family violence that were struggling at Christmas-time and to take pressure off some of the existing Christmas hamper programs in Medicine Hat.

The deadline for applications was December 1st, but far more applications were received than were anticipated leaving the program short around seven sponsors. Families range in size from a single mother with one child to a family with up to four children.
If you are interested in helping to make a local family’s Christmas one to celebrate, please contact the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society at 403-527-8223 or send an email to the 2017 Adopt a Family Coordinator, Bridgit Dufort, at This email address is being protected from spambots. The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is also in need of ‘new’ personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and brushes, lip balm/Chapstick, body wash, deodorant, hairbrushes, facial cleansers, nail clippers, baby shampoo and wipes, hair accessories, razors, and toilet paper.
For clothing, they only accept new items and are seeking ladies’ underwear and bras (all sizes), ladies pajamas (all sizes), ladies and girls’ leggings (all sizes), infant diaper shirts 0-18 months), children’s’ T-shirts, casual pants and shirts (all sizes), and teen clothing (all sizes).
Fuel gift cards, as well as transit and taxi passes help families get to appointments, and other gift cards are also welcome. To learn more about what all is needed, contact the MHWSS at 403-527-8223 or visit their website at www.mhwss.ca
