Alberta Health Services (AHS) will be reviewing the elective surgery schedule for Monday, May 15, over this coming weekend, for potential postponement of additional surgeries scheduled to take place on Monday. The decision on any additional postponements will depend on progress made on resolving the water quality concern that is still currently impacting our ability to sterilize/reprocess medical devices at this site. To-date, 106 postponements have taken place May 9 through May 12.

The postponement of these elective surgeries has allowed us to maintain our supply of devices for emergency surgeries at this facility, while we have continued to investigate the water quality concern and address the issue. We are making progress in identifying potential root causes; however, at this time, we have not reached formal conclusions on root cause and are thus unable to predict exact timing for resumption of medical device reprocessing at the facility.
We know this is inconvenient and potentially stressful for the affected or potentially affected patients, and we apologize for that. Decisions are made with patients first in mind.
Our most immediate concern is, as always, the safety and wellbeing of patients, physicians, staff and visitors. We do know that there has been no impact on inpatient, urgent and emergency care, and water serving patients, volunteers, physicians and staff is safe.
AHS will advise any additional affected patients of surgery postponements prior to Monday, and we do continue working toward a normal surgical schedule as quickly as possible. Any patients already impacted by postponements will be contacted again by their surgeon’s office to reschedule procedures as soon as possible
Affected patients, or patients who are uncertain if their surgery is impacted or concerned about this issue, can call Site Administration at 403-502-8648 (ext. 1509) during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
After hours, patients can contact MHRH switchboard at 403-529-8000 and calls will be returned the following morning.
We thank all our staff, physicians and volunteers for their assistance and dedication to maintaining excellent patient care and services.
