There is no question farming can be a stressful way of life, and drought, financial pressures and industry crises in recent years have only increased the pressures on farm families today.

Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) announced Jan. 4 the appointment of Patti Miller as chief commissioner of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC), beginning on Feb. 13.

Canadian agriculture benefited from a relatively low dollar throughout 2016 and this trend is expected to continue into 2017, according to J.P. Gervais, Farm Credit Canada’s chief agricultural economist.

To date, there remain six confirmed cases of bovine TB. This number includes the cow that was confirmed to have the disease when it was slaughtered in the United States.

The harvest season for 2016 was one of the longest ones on record. Some producers began harvest operations in the first week of August and were unable to complete it until the end of November, due to cool wet weather that delayed harvest progress.
