Central School songwriting workshop, Feb. 2, 2018

Written by

Saskatchewan singer-songwriter Jeffery Straker visited Central School in Swift Current for a songwriting workshop with a group of Grade 5-8 students, Feb. 2. The workshop concluded the process to write a “Cougar Strong” song to reflect the school's culture and values. Music teacher Celia Hammerton brainstormed ideas for the song with students in different grades before Straker's visit. During the workshop the 21 students created the verses, chorus and melody for the song with guidance from Straker. The project provided a unique opportunity to students to explore their creativity and to learn about the songwriting process. Straker visited the school twice before for songwriting workshops with students. The one song was created for Central School's centennial celebrations in 2014, and the other one was performed by the school's choir at Telemiracle 40 in 2016.
