Former air cadet returns to Swift Current to speak about his military career, Oct. 25, 2017

A former member of 605 Tarry Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Swift Current who is now a serving member of the Canadian Forces returned to the city as a guest of honour at a parade of cadets, Oct. 25. Lt.-Col. Colin Coakwell, who is currently posted at 2 Canadian Air Division in Winnipeg, was the reviewing officer at the parade night. Afterwards he spoke about his years as an air cadet and his military career. He grew up on a farm near Elrose and he was a member of 605 Tarry Squadron from 1991 to 1993. As a cadet he attended basic and glider courses. In 1994 he enrolled in the Canadian Forces and he has served in various roles in Canada and abroad. He completed a bachelor degree in electrical and electronics engineering at the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters of Defence Studies at the Canadian Forces College. He became a tactical helicopter pilot and he also obtained qualifications in flight instruction and command, tactical aviation, and operations. He has flown a variety of military helicopters and his operational experience includes deployments to Bosnia and Afghanistan.
