Stars for Saskatchewan concert in Swift Current, May 5, 2017

The final performance in the Swift Current Allied Arts Council's Stars for Saskatchewan concert series for 2016-17 took place at the Living Sky Casino Sky Centre, May 5. The evening started with a performance by the Swift Current Jazz Orchestra, a community-based non-profit jazz ensemble that took the audience on a nostalgic musical journey to the big band sounds of the 1930s and 1940s. Therafter the multi-award winning Canadian play Jake's Gift was performed by playwright and performer Julia Mackey. She skillfully transitioned between different characters as she told the story of a Canadian Second World War veteran who returns reluctantly to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of D-Day, where he encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old inhabitant of the local village. This is the 50th anniversary season of the Swift Current Allied Arts Council and this milestone will be celebrated during a golden gala at the Sky Centre, May 27. The focus of the evening will be on celebration and not fundraising. There will be a served plated dinner, the group Memory Lane will play music from the 1940s to 1960s for patrons to enjoy and dance to. Gala tickets are $100 per person and available at the Living Sky Casino box office.
