The Waldeck Warriors Junior Girls basketball team won the 2013/14 SWAC Junior Girls Basketball Championship after defeating the Swift Comprehensive High School Ardens team in a nail-biting finish with a score of 63-59. The match, played at Waldeck School on Feb. 27, kept fans on the edge of their seats as the teams battled during the final minutes for the lead. The Warriors got off to a strong start and was leading 41-27 at halftime, but the Ardens fought back and with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter the teams were tied at 57 points. Two late baskets gave the home team the edge and the Ardens added two points on free throws.

Winter carnival in Swift Current, Feb. 19, 2014

 The Southwest Early Childhood Action Coalition (ECAC) hosted the 2014 Winter Carnival in Swift Current on Feb. 19 for families with children six years of age and under. A variety of fun activities took place at the Bright Beginnings Family Centre and Riverdene Park. The outdoor activities included skating with the Swift Current Broncos as well as tobogganing and sleigh rides. Over the noon hour there were cheque presentations from the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and the Kiwanis Club of Swift Current in support of the Southwest ECAC. The Kiwanis Club made a $1,000 donation to the Parent Support Network, which is a ECAC working committee, and the RBC donated $5,000 towards the ECAC.


 A large and enthusiastic crowd of around 200 people attended the Swift Current Friendship Centre Boxing Club's 1st annual Earl Monkman Memorial boxing card at the Eagles Hall on Feb. 15. There were eight competitive bouts and one sparring bout during the evening between boxers representing seven boxing clubs from Saskatchewan and Alberta. Boxers from the Swift Current Friendship Centre Boxing Club participated in five competitive bouts and won three. Logan Clouthier won with a technical knockout over Devan Little (Medicine Hat) in the 67 kg weight category, Nick Habscheid won in the 96 kg category after a voluntary retirement from Steve Berg (Black and Blue Boxing Club) at the end of the second round, and Eric Wiebe won on points in the 58 kg category against Taevan Edwards of Medicine Hat. Justin Belanger lost on points in the 75 kg category against Mohammed (Black and Blue) and Tyler Wilson lost on points against Vaughn Fauth of the Turtle River Boxing Club in the 93 kg category. Kaitlyn Fehr participated in a sparring bout against Madison Matthews (Black and Blue) in the 59 kg category.

Residents from across southwest Saskatchewan were at the Credit Union iPlex in Swift Current on Feb. 1 to see the Grey Cup and get autographs from five Saskatchewan Roughrider players – Dan Clark, Diamond Ferri, Mike McCullough, Jordan Sisco and Taj Smith. The Swift Current Broncos hosted a public event from 1-3 p.m. for fans to meet the players and to get their photos taken with the Grey Cup. The doors open at 5 p.m. for that evening's Rider Night game between the Broncos and the Prince George Cougars to give ticket holders time with the players and the Grey Cup. Taj Smit dropped the puck at the start of the game.
