Soap box racers continued a long-time Father's Day tradition in Swift Current when they raced downhill along Central Avenue North in their colourful race cars, June 18. There were 19 participants in this year's event, with 10 junior and nine senior racers. Below are the Swift results for the Current Soap Box Racing Association's 35th annual race:

Senior A side: 1st Cassandra Katorynych, 2nd Jacob Dickson, 3rd Joshua Laverdiere, 4th Caeden Ivey.

Senior B side: 1st Serenity Laverdiere, 2nd Aiden Jahnke, 3rd Caden Kenny, 4th Amisha Hockridge.

Junior A side: 1st Nicole Pelletier, 2nd Lucas Ivey, 3rd Conner Jesney, 4th Jonas Schultz.

Junior B side: 1st Ayden Snyder, 2nd Aidan Cox, 3rd Sophia Laverdiere, 4th Kate Klonarakis.

 

The popular Market Square in downtown Swift Current opened for a new season on June 17. The event has become an important part of the summer activities in the city since 2011. This season's opening day was well attended. People enjoyed live music, shopped for fresh produce at the farmer's market and visited the many food and other vendors at the market. A local band, the Country Strings, was the opening act on the entertainment stage. The other performers during the day were the Regina band Boomtown and another Swift Current area band, Creek City. Market Square takes place every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Sept. 30.

YouthFest in Swift Current, June 15, 2017

There was a variety of activities for participants at the 2nd annual YouthFest in downtown Swift Current, June 15. The event was hosted by the City of Swift Current and the Swift Current Community Youth Initiative, and sponsored by Innovation Credit Union. It provided an evening of fun and entertainment for youth in Grade 5-9. The street in front of The Center was closed for the outdoor activities, which included an inflatable jousting arena, fire pits provided by the Swift Current Fire Department for roasting s'mores, and a skateboarding area with ramps provided by Swift Current Skateboarding Inc. There were also indoor activities at The Center, such as a dance competition and black light canvas painting.

 

The 150th anniversary of Canadian confederation in 2017 marks a significant moment in the country’s history, but it also provides Canadians with an opportunity to reflect on their past and to think about the future.

A passionate group of volunteers in Swift Current are extending a helping hand to a rural community in Africa who are hoping to build a school for their children.

Swift Current's Lyric Theatre is looking for community support in an online voting competition to win up to $60,000 for the renovation of the historic theatre's upper floor.

The Swift Current Redneck Betties used their speed and offensive skills to overpower the Saskatoon Killa Bees during a roller derby game at the Innovation Credit Union, June 10. The Redneck Betties had a 105-37 lead at halftime and continued to score points during the second half to win 209-91. Roller derby fans in Swift Current will have to wait a while before seeing their team on the track again. The Redneck Betties will play their final home game of the season on Sept. 16.
