Dancers preparing for annual recital

The Dance Studio in Swift Current is preparing for an annual highlight when students showcase their talents at the end of season recital, but the studio is also presenting various other dance events during the spring and summer.

The final performance in the Swift Current Allied Arts Council's Stars for Saskatchewan concert series for 2016-17 took place at the Living Sky Casino Sky Centre, May 5.

Badminton championships wrap up season

The SHSAA region A badminton championships were held May 6 in Swift Current. 

A rally against education budget cuts and changes to the Education Act took place in front of the office of Swift Current MLA and Premier Brad Wall, May 5.

Cadets commemorated the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest single battle of the Second World War, during a parade at the Memorial Park cenotaph in Swift Current, May 7. Similar events took place on this day across Canada and in the United Kingdom. The event in Swift Current was hosted by the #259 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Drylander with participation by members of the #128 Navy League Cadet Corps Prairie Schooner and #605 Tarry Royal Canadian Air Cadets. This battle lasted for five year, eight months and five days. It resulted in the loss of 24 Canadian warships and over 60 Canadian registered merchant ships. Almost 2,000 Royal Canadian Navy sailors, 1,600 Canadian merchant seamen and 752 Canadian airmen lost their lives.

 

Swift Current singer-songwriter Colter Wall returned to his hometown to start the North American tour for his debut full-length album, titled Colter Wall, at the Lyric Theatre, May 5. The concert was sold out and he received a warm welcome from the audience. Upcoming tour dates include performances in Toronto, New York and Nashville, while he will also be undertaking a tour to the United Kingdom and Europe with stops in London, Berlin and Amsterdam.
